KUALA LUMPUR: The National Sports Council (NSC) are clear with their vision for the year – to see Malaysia achieve the best-ever results in both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
The NSC director general, Datuk Zolkples Embong, said that he had taken up the challenge to lead the national associations (NSAs) to lift Malaysian sports a notch higher. Malaysia are looking at winning 11 gold medals in the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in New Delhi in October. And the target at the Asian Games in Guangzhou in November is nine gold medals. The best achievement thus far in the Commonwealth Games was 10 gold medals in Kuala Lumpur in 1998. In the Asian Games, the high was an eight-gold haul in Doha in 2006. And to meet the goals, Zolkples said that the NSC would review the programmes to strengthen the preparation of the athletes. “Previously, we looked at the sport as a whole in setting targets for major Games. This time, we will target the athletes,” he said. “We will identify the athletes with potential and the focus will be solely on them. The targets are to get he best results in the two major Games this year.” Zolkples, who is also the chef-de-mission of the contingent for the Asiad, wants the NSAs to identify their team managers for the Games soon. “The NSC plan to have a meeting with all team managers in the first week of February and get down to work,” he said. “Secretariats will be set up for both the Commonwealth Games and Asiad and we expect them to start work on a full-time basis.” The focus will be on improving the quality of training of athletes for both Games and Zolkples warned the NSAs against taking the NSC for a ride. “Attention will be on the two Games this year and also on the 2012 Road to London programme. We will continue with our review as far as budgets are concerned for the NSAs,” he said. “They cannot expect to get whatever they want. We will look into their training and coaching programmes.” Source: The Star Online |
